An effective overall personal brand is one that is:
• confident
• consistent
• of a positive stereotype

Let’s look at each of these terms in more detail and how they apply to our personal brand.

Confident

When you look good, appear comfortable with yourself and are congruent with your personal brand statement, your packaging can then recede from attention and others can focus on you and the conversation. This focuses clients on the relevancy of your products and services rather than on the question of whether they want to do business with you as they consider your overall presentation.

So be competent, be prepared and be confident in your abilities.

Knowledge is the surest way to make a credible name for yourself as you become the recognized expert. You can leverage that knowledge into a halo of authority. These can cement your place as the leader in your market niche. Always ensure you are neat and well groomed and do not provide distractions from your message.

Self-confidence and the appearance of self-confidence is a brand’s more powerful strategy. The confident mindset is an incredible propeller in all aspects of life.

Confidence is a self fulfilling prophecy. Confidence is sexy and wildly attractive.

Just look at the impact of Paris Hilton’s confidence on her personal brand equity. Customers flock to a confident brand. It is also very important to maintain people’s confidence in your brand by being congruent and trustworthy.

Jim Rohn accurately highlights, “Effective communication is twenty percent what you know and eighty percent how you feel about what you know.”

Consistent

Creating a consistent brand is important. Your personal brand is a reflection of what you’re capable of. Is your brand an accurate and consistent reflection of your abilities and potential? Your message and your performance must be consistent.

Research has shown time and again there is a direct correlation between a product’s level of awareness and its market share. Even more fascinating is the fairly common perception that a better known product is a better product … whether it is or not.

In order to create perceptions, a consistent flow of information is needed to raise awareness. Remember, your goal is to control the flow of information about you, and to do that you must provide information that clearly defines your business, which in turn is you!

Keeping up a steady flow of information increases your chances of influencing what people think about you, your product, service or company. The absence of such information leaves it for your critics and competitors to define your business.

Brand consistency is critical to developing brand loyalty. Brand inconsistency erodes confidence. So you must develop habits and activities that support your personal brand tone. And it’s essential that your personal brand is consistent with your business brand, mission and service standards.

Positive Stereotype

Stereotypes can make a lasting impression. If you look like you belong to a certain group you will be perceived as having the same attitudes and characteristics associated with that group’s public image. So choose your stereotype carefully.

Ask yourself, “What are the characteristics associated with the brand I want to project?”

Remember that social psychologists say first impressions are made up of fifty-five percent visual input. Visual impressions are important and are an integral part of the communication process. Visual aspects of your business such as vehicles, staff attire, workspaces and stationery should reflect your overall elected business image and your personal brand.
